Also known as the Outer Hebrides, the chain of Western
Isles stretches 130 miles from the Butt of Lewis to Barra Head,
incorporating Harris, North and South Uist, and Benbecula in between.
Steeped in history, the islands have been inhabited for over six
thousand years, and are the heartland of the ancient Gaelic language.
The islands also boast superb clean sandy beaches, an array of wild
flora and fauna, and a diversity of birdlife. There are four National
Trust nature reserves, plus a large number of archaeological sites.
Lewis and Harris, although physically
linked, offer a contrast in terrain; Lewis with its largely rolling
moorland and low-lying hills dotted with freshwater lochs, Harris
with its mountain range, challenging climbers and hillwalkers alike.
Other outdoor activities include canoeing, sea kayaking, golfing
and fishing.
Inter-island links, whether by
ferry or causeways, have made touring this region fairly simple,
but remember that its deepseated religious beliefs usually mean
that there is no public transport on Sundays, and services on Wednesday
afternoons are also restricted.
