These areas, with their strong Scandinavian links,
offer the visitor an experience different from anywhere else in
Scotland. The monuments in Orkney pre-date those of many other civilistations,
for example the Stones of Stennes, going back 5000 years. The prehistoric
past of Orkney is so important that a trust was formed in 1996 to
provide a dedicated archaeological service. History aside, Orkney
has much to offer with its breathtaking sunsets against miles of
golden, sandy beaches. Coastal cliffs provide breeding ground for
kittiwakes, puffins, guillemots and razorbills. Otters and seals
are common sightings, and it has even been known for a seal to be
audacious enough to steal a visitor's beach picnic!
Shetland is made up of over one hundred
islands, of which only 15 are continuously inhabited. It lies directly
between Scotland and Norway, providing a peaceful haven for migrating
birds. Each island has its own character and identity, the sea being
a most important factor. The coastline is deeply indented with "mini
fjords" and the crystel clear waters, colourful marine life
and large number of shipwrecks, form a huge attraction for divers.
Being surrounded by so much water, (nowhere is more than three miles
from the sea) visitors must not miss the opportunity to sample some
of the freshest fish dishes imaginable!
With such close links to Scandinavia,
even today the Vikings influence the culture and traditions of Shetland;
many place names are more Scandinavian than Scottish. The month
of January heralds the famous annual "fire festival".
A thousand flaming torches are carried through the streets of Lerwick
before setting alight a replica Viking longship.
