Welcome to the Highlands of Scotland Area Tourist Information

For many it is the sheer grandeur and majesty of the Highlands which makes it such a popular area. The largest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, towers above the town of Fort William on the west coast; there is the Ardnamurchan peninsula, the magnificent area in the west highlands renowned for its peace, beauty and wildlife; Glencoe and the Cairngorms also attract the outdoor enthusiast in winter and summer, along with the Cuillins on Skye. Spectacular waterfalls cascade down the mountains, and all around there is a green hue in spring and summer, turning to the purple of the heather in autumn. Wonderful white sandy beaches, often deserted, dot the coastline of both the mainland and the inner isles. In season, island hopscotching is a regular tourist activity, whilst those preferring to stay on the mainland can tour from Glencoe to John o'Groats with plenty to see and do in between.

The area is steeped in history, and there are reminders everywhere of the turbulent past of the Highlands, from castles such as Old Inverlochy Castle, Fort William to battlefields. Follow the path of Bonnie Prince Charlie from Glenfinnan to Culloden and the Isle of Skye or learn more about the infamous "highland clearances", evidenced by the many ruined old croft houses and communities scattered across the area.
