Outdoor Activities in Scotland

Scotland is roughly half the size of England, and two-thirds of the countryside is moorland and mountains. Geographically, Scotland can be divided into three areas: the Central Lowlands, the Southern Uplands and the Northern Highlands and Islands. Scotland has 790 islands of which 130 are inhabited. The island groups include the Inner and Outer Hebrides, the Shetlands and the Orkneys. Every area of Scotland offers unique and exciting opportunities for outdoor activities.

Summer and winter activities

The best time to visit Scotland is between the months of May and September although skiing takes place in the Highlands in the winter. Scotland is a golfer`s paradise and has world-famous golf courses. However, if you wish to indulge in some other pastimes, such as walking, cycling, riding or fishing, the beautiful Scottish scenery will add that extra dimension. From a short stroll to a trek through wilderness areas, Scotland offers the opportunity to experience wonderful wildlife. captivating culture and stunning scenery.

Walking

Without a doubt, one of the best walking routes in Scotland is the West Highland Way which covers all that you would want to see when in Scotland, except the sea. More than seventy thousand people walk this route every year which has helped build up the trade of the hostels and bed and breakfast accommodation along the Way. Walks in Scotland range from family rambles to tougher cross-country hikes and mountain ascents. It may seem a little like cheating but the routes can be downloaded to your GPS. The Lochaber area round and about Fort William is a mecca for mountain and hillwalking. This area has plenty of Munros - which are mountains over 3,000 feet - and mountain paths. The Scottish Mountaineering Club produces guide books on walks all over Scotland and advice on hillwalking.

Other Outdoor Activities

You can enjoy a wealth of active pursuits in Scotland - canoeing, white-water rafting, mountain biking and mountaineering to name but a few. The Scottish Forestry Commission is putting mountain biking on the world stage. Scotland ranks as one of the top places on the planet to go biking with a growing network of challenging and fun trails.
Scottish scenery is unsurpassed in Britain. If you have never visited this country, have a look at some photos of its lochs, glens and rolling hillsides and you will be amazed what is on your doorstep.

Scottish Weather

Summers in Scotland can be surprisingly gentle. Rarely experiencing extreme heat, weather can however be warm and dry. Camping, trekking and hiking are popular sports which require the right type of outdoor gear and the right type of tent.
